Carpenter : Gamma "γ" 120-220 vs Maihime "Princess Dancer" 120-220 vs Gen-Ei "Ghost" 120-225

Got few friends who ask me the difference between γ-120, Maihime 120 and Gen-Ei 120.  First answer is I am not claim to be an authority in the field of rod, lure and equipment testing.  Should refer to official Carpenter site.

Anyway, below is just my feedback.

Both γ-120 and Maihime length is 220mm while Gen-Ei is 5mm longer.  I feel that Maihime  has the biggest head shape, followed by γ-120  and the smallest headshape is Gen-Ei.  Need to buy a vernier scale to confirm the exact size.

Balance wise, all = more or less the same.  Blue is γ-120, middle is Maihime

Length =  bottom Gen-Ei is 5mm longer

Notice the placement drilled hole. Left is Gen-Ei, middle is Maihime, right is γ-120

Tested all 3 with TBL80/30, Stella SW14000 loaded with Powerpro 80, leader Fisherman 150lb and Decoy Saltwater 6/0 hooks + Carpenter 250lb splitrings.  Found that Gen-Ei has smaller and tighter sharper  "S" swim compared with γ-120 and Maihime.  Both Maihime and Gen-Ei are relatively easier to "play".  Both Maihime and Gen-Ei heads tends to broke surface faster than γ-120.  γ-120 produced the thickest bubble trail due its "dive" action.  With Gen-Ei, i can "chug" fast at the highest speed.  γ-120 has more body rolling action.  Maihime can be played with shorter pitch compare to γ-120.  Well that is just my feedback.  Hopefully i can make a video to explain more clearly.

Please refer to below links of Carpenter official site.

New 2018 STUDIO Oceanmark No Limit 13 SW16000 ver 2

Got my hands on this very nice spare spool for my Stella 2013 SW14000XG.  I thought it just another SOM spool compared with the previous 2013 version.  I was totally wrong.

I haven't got any chance to test the new spool with fish-on so have no idea about the drag power and smoothness.  Notice few "?improvements?" were made i.e. teflon drag washer, stacking patterns, tapered spool lip, reduced weight.

Original spool of 2013 Stella SW14000XG

We landed at 6.35am in Salalah.  After a hassle free immigration and customs, we were greeted by Captain Swabir and Captain Jamil of Noukhada.  Since we arrived too early and Lulu Supermarket open at 9.00am, I just gave Capt Swabir a shopping list of food and extra groceries for him to buy at Lulu eg. breaded Chicken Drumstick, Redbull Energy drinks.  Very short list since everything else about food & drink is ready for us at Noukhada Lodge in Shuwameyah.

We took the 12 seater van for travelling to Ash Shuwaymiyyah while our baggages handle by Swabir 4x4 Toyota.  Journey of 282km to Ash Shuwaymiyyah will take ~ 3.5 hours via beautiful coastal road of Mirbat, Sadah and Hasik.  After few stops for breakfast and scenic photography, we reached Noukhada Fishing Charter Oman lodge.

Oman April 13-22, 2018: Trip Preparation

Big trip this year to Khuria Muria Islands of Sultanate Of Oman.
This archipelago is a group of five main islands in the Arabian Sea, 40 km (25 mi) off the southeastern coast of the Sultanate of Oman. The islands form part of the province of Shalim and the Hallaniyat Islands in the governorate of Dhofar.
Five main islands namely Al-Hasikiyah, Al-Sawda, Al-Hallaniyah, Al-Qibliyah and Qarzawit. Al Hallaniyah ( الحلانية) is the largest and only inhabited of the Khuriya Muriya Islands, which belong to Oman. It is located in the center of the group, eight kilometers east of Al-Sawda, the closest island, and the second largest of the group.  Please refer to Google and Wipedia for further infomation.

Our route this time via Qatar Airways i.e. Kuala Lumpur-Doha-Salalah due to the  upgrading the Salalah airport to International status. Standard check-in luggage weight is 30kg. We did buy extra 5kg for peace of mind purpose.  Transport is provided for us to travel from Salalah to Shuwaimeyah which takes ~ 3.5 hours to cover 334km.

We will be staying in Noukhada Fishing Lodge in Shuwaimeyah with 6 days of GT popping with optional camping in Al-Sawda for 3-4 nights.

As Jan 2018, visitors are required to apply online E-visa from Sultanate Of Oman.  4 documents are needed i.e. your recent photograph, copy of passport, copy of arrival and return ticket and invitaion letter from the fishing operator.  Please apply visa at https://evisa.rop.gov.om/

Although this is a GT popping trip, amberjack jigging is an option for us, thus 3-4 fast sinking jigs are also included in our checking baggage.

This will be my 3rd visit to Khuria Muria Islands which gives me some sort of advantage on where and what lures to use for the GTs.  Simple answer is big lures = big GT!!!!  Big mouth chuggers are always preferable to call them.  Big stickbait between 140-200grams also will entice the GT.  This time i will come with minimal lure quantities but proven action.  Chuggers included Adhek Cuttle, HeammerHead E, D, C cups, Craftbait GT2 & GT3 150, Carpenter Seafrog TwinHooks and Carpenter HustlePop 130.  Diving poppers are NativeWork Napalm 220 and 200 size. As for the stickbaits, i prepared few Carpenter Gammas 160, 140, Bluefish 140 & 120 and Maihime 120.  Sinking/suspended stickbaits with be Orion Bigfoot 140 and Hammerhead Boarder Deepchaser.  Also 2 surface skipping lures of Adhek Ocen Lady and Adhek Pluto.

Chugger and Diving Lures

Stickbait and swimbait

Will prepare 6 Shimano Stella reels i.e. 2008 Stella 18000, 2013 Stella 18000, 2 x 2013 Stella 14000 and 2 x 2008 Stella 10000 with SOM 16000 spools.  All spools wil be filled by Power Pro red 100lb class.

Leader will be Fisherman 170 & 200lb and Prosele nanodax 170 & 210lb tied to size 1 and 1/0 NT swivel and Owner #10 & #11 splitrings.

As for hooks, 100% Decoys Salwater Series saiz 5/0, 6/0 and 7/0.

Go Big Or Go Home

Few feedback that i got are, all my current setups are PE6-8 class.  Well, most of my "local" trips are targeting GT ca 10-20kg class which will survive the pairing of rods with Stella 14000XG and/or Stella 10000XG SOM 16000.

For those who likes big mouth chuggers with minimum weight 135g up to 230g, different rod and reel setup is needed.  I am not fimiliar with Daiwa, but with Stella, 18000XG PE10-12 is a must.
Example of these chugger are Hammerhead E-cup 145g, G-cup 190g , I-cup 215g, Craftbait GT3 150g, 170g 190g, PD Masterd Bomb BIG-CUP 170, MASTERD BOMB 205, Shell Shaping ChuBar 205, Orion Cono Cono 160, 190 & 220, Orion Monster 210,

Fews rods that i know which cover PE10-12 range and chug big mouth poppers:

1) Carpenter SP78UHL-SHP
2) Carpenter SP78EXH
3) Carpenter SP78H-SHP
4) Carpenter MH80H
5) Carpenter MH79XH
6) Carpenter MH79 Extreme
7) RippleFisher OceanRidge FINAL SPIRIT GT 80 Nano
8) RippleFisher OceanRidge FINAL SPIRIT GT 79 Nano
9) Hammerhead Faube 77H
10) Hammerhead Faube 77M+
11) Smith WRC-77H2B ROCKET
12) Smith WRC Komodo Dragon
13) Smith WRC Tokara 60
14) Smith GTK 77 Keyolhu
15) Hots GIPANG Ryujin 75 XXH
16) Hots GIPANG Ryujin 79 XH
17) Fisherman Monster CC72GT
18) Fisherman Monster CC75GT
19) Fisherman Monster CC74GTS
20) Fiserman Monster CC77GTS
21) Patriot Design Black Mafia 76 MNSG

23) Patriot Design Fire Vortex GT Ultimate XTX76
24) SaltyWaterTackle Race Point 300

Above rod list is maybe short, will do more research.  Until then, happy hunting.

Trip Preparation : Rods

Got few quiries on which rod do i bring to popping trips.
Well, it still depends on where is the location, what is the target fish size, which lure to have more weighted i.e. popper or stickbait, how big is the popper, which reel to pair with...etc etc...

I kinda know that it is nearly impossible to have a multifunctional GT popping rod that can cast 150g chugger and 150g stickbait all day.  Specific rod is for specific task.
But for me, i am happy if i can cast and use Seafrog Twinhook 120 and Gamma/Bluefish 140 using only 1 rod, targeting GT between 15-35kg.  So all day rod for me is either CV79/40 or F3 711/40.  I might also voted for MH80/40.  Noted all my choice is from 40lb class which in my opinion can chug a 120gram chugger and play Gamma / Bluefish 140 kinda "easy".  Also these 3 rods have the "power" to lift sizeable stubborn GT when it lie underneath the boat.

From left: CV79/40, SP76ML, MH79EXT, F3711/40, TBL80/35, PJ80/36

As per establishment, Carpenter rods are classed based on their poundage which help us to estimate the max lure and max drag force.  Belows are few example of Carpenter series

Note, when comparing the 40lb class, CV 79/40 is a PE6-8 rod which kinda forgiving "beginner rod" and has the least LureMax i.e. 200g which indicate the tip is slightly softer which is good for lighter stickbait eg. 120-140gram Gamma. Also, with the lightest rod weight, CV79/40 paired with Stella 14000 will gives angler less fatigue for whole day usage. I have tested F3 711/40 and MH80/40 and in my opinion, they are suitable for γ-200 with minimum  γ-160 with PE10 setup.
